Brits to replace the pint glass?

I'm not the first to say it, but... What the fuck is wrong with your country??

Nearly 87,000 injuries are caused by glass attacks each year in England and Wales, according to the Home Office. Many more are hurt as a result of accidents.

The worrying figures have prompted a redesign of the classic pint glass, with police, facial surgeons, pubs and brewers all voicing concern about the high number of glassings.

The government hopes introducing safer pint glasses, still made of glass, will help reduce injuries. As well as the human cost, it also hopes it will reduce the financial burden of alcohol-related crime, which currently costs the NHS £2.7bn a year.

Another argument against socialized medicine. Also, how would they enforce this? Are British businesses not free to choose their own equipment? How regulated is this stuff??

Just hope it won't be as tacky as the URC (Ubiquitous Red Cup) so common here in the US. As featured in the classic American Chopper Series where the father seems to constantly have one attached. I'm surprised they haven't built a red plastic cup chopper yet!

A lot of places use plastic pint glasses anyway, because they always get dropped.

There seems to be this craze of dick heads glassing people, cant see this being any worse than any other country though, they are not getting rid of pint glasses, what they are doing is making the glasses with the same consistency of a car window that would break into tiny pieces of cullet rather than break into the damaging shard of glass that rips ya face open, so we keep the Pint Pot but if ya get one in the face it will just shatter into thousands of little pieces, they have been looking at this design for years...
St Helens where i live is and has been a glass making town for a couple of hundred years with Pilkingtons glasss works making sheet glass and Ravenhead Glass making drinking glasses also United Glass Bottles making Beer and Pop (soda) Bottles. St Helens was once the main exporter of glass in the world. As i said Ravenhead Glass have been looking at a better safer Pint Pot for ya beer for some time now and it wouldnt bother me if they did, i would hate to drink beer out of one of those paper cups that we see on TV in US bars...

I will say that those ubiquitous red cups are not the standard here in the US, regardless of what television may portray. At least here in Iowa it's usually a flatwalled, heavy bottomed glass filled to the brim with terrible, terrible beer.Ala the chick on the left in Hellboy's pic.

What the hell is glassing, anyway? Do they throw glasses at each other? Doesn't that waste beer?

I wouldn't say that the red cup is standard here either...In college people use them and in beer pong they use them, but you don't see them at bars.
